The ultraviolet absorption spectrum of 2, 4, 6-trimethylbenzoic acid in 100 per cent sulfuric acid
Abstract
The uv absorption spectra of solutions of 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoic acid in sulfuric acid were investigated. Concentrations of sulfuric acid ranging from 85 to 104.5 per cent were considered. Characteristic absorption bands were found at 208.5 and 282.5 mμ at all sulfuric acid concentrations chosen. The solution of TMB in 100 per cent sulfuric acid contained an additional intense band, ε{lunate}m = 4200, at 328 mμ. That band was assigned as an intramolecular charge transfer band characteristic of the acyllium ion, MesCO+. © 1967.
