Dioxin: Field Research Opportunities At Times Beach, Missouri
Abstract
The city of Times Beach, which is located in eastern Missouri near St. Louis, is the most extensively contaminated area in the state. It is estimated that some 60% of all known dioxin-contaminated soil in Missouri is located in Times Beach, and as much as 90% is within 60 mi of that city. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Missouri are spending over 33 million to purchase all Times Beach property and relocate the 800 families living there. A comprehensive sampling and analysis program was conducted to determine initial reference levels of dioxin, and the plots are now available for in situ investigations. The units are normally assigned in sets of three, giving the investigators the capability of establishing one unit as a standard reference control and varying the parameters in the other two.
