Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of [Co(py)₂(H₂O)₂Br₂]
Abstract
The crystal structure and magnetic properties of [Co(py)2(H 2O)2Br2] are reported. The space group is P1̄, with one molecule in the unit cell. The cell dimensions are a=6.400(1) Å, b=6.789(2) Å, and c=8.638(1) Å; the angle α=109.06(2), β=103.01(2), and γ=97.50(3) deg. The magnetic susceptibilities of both the polycrystalline powder and single crystals have been measured. The data are quite anisotropic and may be analyzed by the Ising model with g∥=5.99(2) and J/kB=-0.99(2) K. The data show that the substance undergoes magnetic ordering at Tc=3.43(3) K, with the easy axis of spin alignment lying nearly parallel to the a axis. The likely superexchange paths are described.
