Formulation of Flat Latex Coatings with Aluminium Trihydroxide as an Extender Pigment for Titanium Dioxide
Abstract
Flat latex coatings, using “SPACERITE” ALUMINUM TRIHYDROXIDE (ATH) as the primary functional extender pigment, were compared with similar formulations using clay as the extender pigment and Celite as a flatting agent. `SPACERITE' ATH S-23 can be used successfully as an extender pigment for titanium dioxide in flat latex paints. In fact, the coatings using `SPACERITE' ATH clearly showed an improvement in the degree of whiteness as well as an increase in scrub resistance without affecting the viscosity, 60 degree gloss, or 85 degree sheen.
