Solvent Self-diffusion in Polystyrene-solvent Systems
Abstract
Solvent self-diffusion coefficients have been measured for a variety of solvents in polystyrene solutions and gels using the pulsed-gradient, spin-echo NMR method. It is shown that the NMR method can be used to measure diffusion coefficients in a very wide range of polymer systems and the general trends found can be used to estimate diffusion coefficients in other polymer-solvent systems. Diffusion data as a function of composition may then be used to predict the diffusion controlled drying of coatings. It was also shown that the solvent diffusion in the crosslinked system was similar to that found in noncrosslinked systems, suggesting that the crosslinks do not provide an additional impediment to diffusion.
