Process Dynamic Simulator for Dynamics and Control Demonstration
Abstract
A highly capable and flexible dynamic process simulation code with a monitor that runs under Microsoft Windows has been developed for use in courses on chemical process dynamics and control and as an aid in the unit operations laboratory. The simulation code, called DYNUMR, can simulate in real-time the dynamic behavior of almost any kind of chemical plant. The monitor presents a process flow diagram which shows current properties of each stream, input and output data tables, and a window for trend plots of any process variable presented. The monitor (a graphical user interface or GUI) also makes it possible to change any controller setpoint or any other process specification variable during the simulation. The DYNUMR-GUI combination will replace the IBM Advanced Chemical System (ACS), which has been used for about 10 years at UMR, but is available only on an IBM mainframe computer which will become unavailable next year.
