Novel Small Peptide Hormones
Abstract
Following the sequencing of the genomes of humans and other mammalian species leading to the development of publicly accessible bioinformatic databases, numerous novel peptides and proteins have been discovered that regulate cardiovascular biology. These novel peptides and proteins represent several classes of biologically active molecules, including endocrine factors, adipokines, myokines, and peptides derived from short open-reading frames upstream of G protein-coupled receptors. In this chapter, we will highlight several recently discovered peptides and proteins and the current knowledge regarding their roles in cardiovascular function.
