Plane Infinitesimal Waves in Elastic Sheets with Bending Stiffness
Abstract
Plane infinitesimal wave propagation is examined in elastic sheets whose strain energy depends on both the first and second derivatives of the deformation. The resulting acoustic-tensor analysis produces dynamical-stability conditions. These are compared to material-stability conditions found previously using equilibrium considerations. A particular solution is demonstrated for the special case of wave propagation in an isotropic elastic sheet subjected to an underlying uniform homogeneous deformation.
