Reflections On Some Thorny Problems In PIE Personal Pronouns

Abstract

Several long-standing problems in the development of the PIE personal pronouns may surprisingly be solvable. The solutions stem from an awareness of reduplication and the changes that may come in its wake (Holmer 1955, Cohen 1976a), together with an awareness of e.g. Pokorny's tentative reconstruction *yu̯es 'you; pI.' (Cohen 1976b). For example, the troublesome Gothic izwis 'you; dat., acc. pI.' can be derived from *yu̯es-yu̯es, with reduction of the vowel in the first part due to that part not being stressed. And this latter observation opens the way to explaining vowel reduction in other PIE personal pronouns. © 1982, Walter de Gruyter. All rights reserved.
