Projectile Ionization in Collisions of U²⁸⁺ and Xe18+ with Gases
Abstract
Cross sections for the stripping of Xe18+ by N2 were measured at energies of 2-9.3 MeV/u. These data were used to benchmark n-body calculations using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. the calculations were then used to predict the stripping of U28+ in various gases at 10-150 MeV/u. These data are needed to assess the vacuum requirements for the planned SIS ring at GSI-Darmstadt. the cross sections are found to scale as v-1, not E-1 as previously predicted, requiring more stringent vacuum requirements.
