Abstract

The progress in mine safety performance in mining industry and various issues regarding mine safety records are discussed. Underground and surface mining performance are also compared across different time spans for coal and metal and nonmetal. The study provides the mining community a greater impetus for continuing its tremendous accomplishments in protecting its greatest resources. It was observed that at the time of Clinton administration, coal had an overall improvement of 21.1%, with significant reductions at both underground and surface operations.
