Abstract

"As the world becomes globalized, economic competition in all areas is intensifying. All types of organizations (such as public, private, for profit, or not-for profit) are affected by this trend. In order to survive, organizations are trying to adapt more quickly to their evolving environment. Higher education institutions are impacted by an increasing competitive environment and must find the means to monitor their competitive environment in an effort to make timely decisions about strategic adjustments because of these environmental changes.

Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly known as the University of Missouri-Rolla) is trying to adapt to its competitive environment. This environment is changing as the university implements strategic planning in an effort to become one of the nation’s top five technological research universities. In this strategic planning process, an analysis of the competitive environment is necessary to understand the external environment in which Missouri University of Science and Technology intends to operate.

In this context, this study focuses on the process for a strategic competitive external environmental analysis of national technological research universities in the United States. The study attempts to form a framework for strategic competitive environmental analysis of a technological research university. It aims to answer the following questions:

  • What is a national technological research university? What are their characteristics?
  • Who are the competitors in this category?
  • What are the forces that are driving change for these universities?
  • What are the key factors in order to succeed?
  • What is the outlook for national technological research universities located in the United States?"--Abstract, page iii.
