Abstract

"Melanoma is a very serious form of cancer that occurs most often in the skin and less frequently in the eye or in the lining of the nose, mouth, or genitals. The word melanoma comes from the Greek words, me/as (black) and oma (tumor). Melanoma begins in melanocytes, cells that make a pigment called melanin. Both light- and darkskinned people have melanin, which gives color to the skin, hair, and parts of the eye. Exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light causes the melanocytes to make more melanin and causes the skin to tan. If the skin receives too much ultraviolet light, the melanocytes may begin to grow abnormally and become cancerous. This leads to melanoma. Annular granular melanoma in situ is a type of lentigo malignant melanoma which is predominantly found in the upper part of the human body namely the face and scalp. An annular granular melanoma in situ typically consists of a region which may either be dark or light. This region is encircled by a light annular ring which is itself encircled by a dark granular ring. This research presents a technique for automatic detection of the annular granular melanoma and also distinguishes between the melanoma and benign images based on the color composition of the granular ring"--Abstract, page iii.
