Sustainability and Corporate Best Practices: Second Triennial Survey of Plastics Industry

Abstract

Objective of the First Survey in 2011 The objective of designing a survey for the plastics industry was to determine the role of sustainability in the plastics industry. We were trying to determine the level of understanding of the concept of sustainability and degree of commitment that the industry had to sustainability. Was it a passing trend or would it have a substantial impact on the industry and company strategy. The survey was initiated with the membership of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) in 2011. The first study was developed and executed by Bonnie J. Bachman and Shristy Bashyal, Missouri University of Science and Technology and Margaret H. Baumann of G. H. Associates, along with members of the SPE Marketing and Management Special Interest Group. Our purpose was to determine the strategies companies are using to address "sustainability" and to what degree is sustainability part of a company's strategy? The findings from the first survey were reported at ANTEC 2011 and 2012 (Bashyal et al., 2011 and Bachman et al., 2012).
