Abstract

"In this investigation an attempt has been made to measure thermal stresses on the outer surface of a thick- walled tube. The inside surface was heated by steam passing through the tube while the outer surface was cooled by water. Two temperature compensated strain gages were used to measure strains in the tangential and axial directions respectively. The advantage of using this type of strain gage is to avoid the use of a dummy gage to compensate for the temperature effect.

The analytical solution to the problem was derived and the values of thermal stresses were calculated theoretically and compared with the experimental values"--Abstract, page ii.
