Abstract:

The resurgence of civil supersonic transport (CST) demands innovative combustion technologies to minimize environmental impact. Through the US FAA ASCENT 074 project, this study presents a preliminary assessment of non-volatile particulate matter (nvPM) and gaseous emissions from a newly fabricated lean premixed pre-vaporized (LPP) combustor designed for CST applications. Emissions measurements were carried out using the Missouri S&T North American Reference System (NARS) and its ancillary instruments, which are certified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Results indicate that the CST combustor produces significantly lower nvPM mass and number emissions than subsonic counterparts at comparable thrust levels. Additionally, fuel-to-air ratio optimization was identified as a key factor in reducing emissions while maintaining operational stability. These findings provide crucial experimental insights for developing low-emission CST engines and regulatory compliance. Future work will expand emissions characterization under various operating conditions to refine combustor design and enhance sustainability.
