Introduction to Additive Manufacturing
Abstract
This chapter introduces the basic definition, principle, and development of various additive manufacturing (AM) processes (e.g., powder bed fusion, electron beam melting, direct metal deposition, etc.). Generic steps for building physical parts from digital 3D design data are introduced. The categories of AM process are presented, and the principle of each category is also clarified. Next, the applications of AM are presented including fabrication of functionally graded materials, repair and remanufacturing of damaged components, fabrication of advanced materials, and fabrication of smart structures with embedded sensors. After that, the distinction between AM and subtractive manufacturing is revealed, and the advantages and challenges of AM are discussed. Besides, hybrid manufacturing, which is the integration of AM with subtractive manufacturing, is introduced. Finally, the limitations and challenges of AM are discussed.
