Abstract

"A dipole-dipole electrical resistivity survey and an induced polarization survey were conducted over a closed sanitary landfill located in a collapsed sink structure. An apparent resistivity model was then created using a finite element program for simulating dipole-dipole resistivity responses of two-dimensional earth resistivity structures, including topography. The initial model cross-section was designed from topographic data of the pre-landfill collapsed sink structure and the post-landfill completion surface.

The dipole-dipole electrical resistivity and induced polarization methods were chosen because the data obtained could be plotted in such a way as to create a two-dimensional pseudo-depth section of the subsurface. The actual apparent resistivity, metal factor, and modeled apparent resistivity pseudo-depth sections were compared to each other and the known original topography of the sanitary landfill to determine the accuracy of each method.

This study shows that the dipole-dipole electrical resistivity, both field and model, and induced polarization methods are capable of mapping the original sanitary landfill boundaries and the probable extent of leachate seepage into the surrounding host medium"--Abstract, page iii.
