Title

A Modified Packed Bed Radial Porosity Correlation

Abstract

The mechanical properties of mono-sized spherical particles in randomly packed fixed bed cylindrical containers continue to be extensively investigated in various scientific and engineering fields. In particular, one of the principal structural parameters considered for randomly packed fixed beds is the axially and azimuthally averaged radial porosity variation, which is a distinctive characteristic quantity that is influenced by the physical association of the spherical particles with the cylindrical container walls. The radial porosity profile is composed of damped oscillations initiating with large porosity values at the container wall, which can be an important consideration in research about and design of engineering fixed packed systems which include, for example, chemical and nuclear pebble bed reactors and thermal solar heat exchangers.
