Preliminary design of a filtering disk controller

Abstract

"This thesis presents a relational data base machine design. At the architectural level of a Processor Per Disk, the Filtering Disk Controller accepts commands at the relation level. The functions moved outboard include SELECTion, PROJECTion, aggregation, addressing, and fetching. The command level allows analysis outboard using data base schema to further evaluate a query, process compressed data, and retrieve aggregations directly. This will enhance data base system and host performance, reduce communication traffic, and present an environment favorable to distribution of the presented data base machine. A preliminary functional design, possible implementations, and the performance of the Filtering Disk Controller are discussed. The estimated performance gain over conventional data base systems is in the range of 40 to 70%"--Abstract, page ii.
