Abstract

"The unsaturated structure and low cost of soybean oil make it a potential material to synthesize polymers. This work aims to find the optimum reaction composition, the effect of reaction time, reaction temperature, initiators, comonomers etc. through cationic polymerization.

Soybean oil - boron trifluoride diethyl etherate system, soybean oil - DVB -boron trifluoride diethyl etherate system, soybean oil - styrene - DVB - boron trifluoride diethyl etherate system, soybean oil -styrene - DVB - boron trifluoride diethyl etherate - benzoyl peroxide system were studied step by step. Especially in soybean oil - styrene - DVB - boron trifluoride diethyl etherate system, the mononfunctional styrene was used as major comonomer, and DVB served as a crosslinking agent. Reaction time, reaction temperature, initiators were investigated. The weight percent conversion of soybean oil was determined by Soxhlet extraction with hexane. When initiated by boron trifluoride diethyl etherate and benzoyl peroxide, 70 wt% of the soybean oil polymerized at 110°C for 4-5 hours. The mechanical property of polymer was investigated but the result is not promising. The approximate initial Young’s modulus of the resulting polymer was 2800psi (19.31Mpa) at room temperature--Abstract, page iii.
