Abstract

PREFACE This report was originally presented as a thesis to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, conferred in September, 1972. Because of its size, the report is published in two parts: Part I: summarizes the present state of knowledge and includes the experimental part of the investigation. Part II: describes the method adopted for the analysis and presents conclusions based on the analytical investigation. The author wishes to thank Professor Arthur H. Nilson, Project director, for his invaluable suggestions, criticism and guidance that made this work possible. This investigation was supported by the American Iron and Steel Institute through research grant no. 1201-201 to Cornell University.
