"It is known that various kinds of mechanical treatments of clay before and during the forming operation will produce variant properties in the dry and burned states of the clay. The investigation here deals with several types of mechanical treatment before the forming operation; all forming being done by moulding by hand"--Introduction, Purpose of the Investigation, page 1.
